On Saturday April 9 the ISU Student Anthropology Society is going to make a trip to the Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls to see the Bodies exhibit. The club will be proving transportation to Idaho Falls, individuals will be responsible for their own tickets, which will cost $8. We'll be meeting at Graveley Hall at 2:00. Anthropology movie night returns Monday night at 6:00. This week's movie is the classic anthropological monstrosity "Quest for Fire" at Clayton's house (email isu.studanth@gmail.com for directions). Abandon all language skills, forget absolutely everything you know about the emergence of Homo sapiens, and bring food, drinks, or a stick (just in case we find the elusive fire).
As part of the Idaho Archaeology Month professional archaeologists and the interested public are invited to an extensive review of the numerous high tech approaches to analyzing historic and prehistoric artifacts at ISU. Join us at CAMAS for demonstrations of X-ray fluorescence, chemical analysis using LA-ICP-MS, electron microscopy, petrographic microscopy, stable isotope analysis using IR-MS, and the 3D imaging technology at the IVL. Bring an artifact and we'll demonstrate the potential analyses we can do for you. The departmental research will be on display along with demonstrations of ancient technologies and modern barbecue. Dr. Maschner will be giving a tour of the Idaho Museum of Natural History at 2:00 and visitors will get an opportunity to see the inner workings of the museum, including the Swanson Repository.

This is a great opportunity for students to get connected with professional archaeologists from various organizations around the state, and a great chance to see the archaeological research at ISU and the technologies we employ.ISU Student Anthropology Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06605696519824142376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5790896750038855350.post-76864639795178775802011-03-11T23:21:00.000-07:002011-03-11T23:21:29.277-07:00SAS Meeting and Movie Night

The ISU SAS will be holding a meeting next Friday, March 18, at 1:00 in Gravely 150. We'll be planning the upcoming Archaeological Sciences at ISU event as well as our atl-atl competition/fundraiser. We'd love to hear your input on these events as well as your suggestions for anthropology themed trips in the near future. Can't come to the meeting? We still want to hear from you. So far, we're considering a competition for manufacturing nerf points of various classification types (I'll be very impressed if someone can produce a Clovis point via overshot flaking), and a prize for the greatest distance spear-chucker. SAS movie night has moved as it conflicted with nearly everyone's schedule. We'll be holding movie night at 5:00 in Graveley 150 every Monday night starting February 21st. Next Monday we will explore what happens when archaeology and socio-cultural anthropology collide. An ancient Egyptian mummy will clash with the deeply held traditions and mores of nursing homes in the American south. JFK and Elvis will fight the dark forces of Lyndon Johnson and the undead. Fry yourself a peanut-butter, banana, and bacon sandwich and join us for "Bubba Ho-Tep."ISU Student Anthropology Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06605696519824142376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5790896750038855350.post-50497687610673026212011-02-08T16:58:00.000-07:002011-02-08T16:58:16.492-07:00Even more SAS events!Don't forget the ISU student organization fair on Wednesday at 11:30 in the Student Union Ballroom.
You can hire ISU's Kappa Sigma Fraternity to do it for you! For $15 per hour you get 2 brothers to do odd jobs around the house and yard. (Putting up Christmas lights anyone?) Your contribution would go toward helping fund community service projects and promoting Kappa Sigma brotherhood. For more information contact Kurtis at 208-899-5804. ISU Student Anthropology Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06605696519824142376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5790896750038855350.post-24729516499360564442010-11-07T17:13:00.000-07:002010-11-07T17:13:03.720-07:00new ISU club: Kendo
Kendo has deep cultural roots and is influenced by Zen. It stresses proper etiquette, strong spirit, and the cultivation of mind and body. There is a local sensei who has agreed to teach club members. Club members can be students, faculty, staff and community members. To be recognized as a club by ISU the group needs at least 12 people to sign up. Potlatch details!

In light of the IMNH re-opening on Saturday, December 4th, we will have our annual Potlatch on Friday, December 3rd. It will be held on at the Elks
Lodge from 6 - 10 PM. The club will be providing the main dish and soft
drinks. We ask that attendants bring a side dish or dessert. There will
be a cash bar open, and the club is covering the cost of the bartender.
We are looking for people to volunteer to help set up, take down and
clean up after the event. The club saves a lot of money this way and we
appreciate any help that is offered. We are also starting to ask for
donations from local businesses for items to be sold at our auction.
Please feel free to ask on behalf of the club! But remember to let
either myself (Jules) or Jess know whom you have contacted so we can
keep a running list. If you have items that you would like to donate for
the auction please contact us. We are excited about this year's event
and hope to see you all there!

Please join us for our next meeting on Friday, November 19th at noon in Graveley 150. Thanks and have a great weekend!
ISU Student Anthropology Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06605696519824142376noreply@blogger.com0
